Is your A/C acting up, and you aren’t sure about what to do? Then you’ve stumbled across the right place! Your Fairfield-Hamilton Heating & Cooling experts are here to aid you in all your A/C needs. Suppose your air conditioner hasn’t given you any trouble. In that case, we still believe it would be a great idea to continue reading and have a backup plan if an unfortunate scenario occurs. This way, you will be prepared if something were to happen.

If Your A/C Goes Out This Summer, What Should You Do?

If your A/C suddenly goes out, a good thing to check first is the batteries on your thermostat. It’s possible that the batteries are low or completely dead. When batteries are nearing the end of their life, this can cause the thermostat to not correctly function and communicate with the air conditioner. So, if you discover the display is not powering on or suspect that the batteries are drawing near the end of their life, try switching them out for a pair of fresh batteries. This might just resolve the problem!

But if you still are experiencing issues with your cooling system after trying out new batteries, you can move on to the next step, which is checking the circuit breaker. Here you will want to confirm the switch for the A/C is still on. It’s likely that the switch got flipped without you noticing. If it’s still not responding, then you can move on to checking the unit located outdoors. This giant metal box is located either on the side or back of your house. It is called the compressor. It’s important to confirm no physical damage or harm has occurred to the unit. Due to its location outside, it’s always possible that a branch or outdoor item fell onto the compressor. For this reason, we suggest frequently checking the area to ensure it is clear of any loose items or outdoor debris. Keep in mind that the compressor normally makes a buzzing noise. This indicates it is functioning as it is supposed to. However, if you hear a sound coming from the unit that you are unfamiliar with, it is time to call an HVAC professional like Fairfield-Hamilton Heating & Cooling.

If Your A/C Goes Out This Summer, What Should You NOT Do?

With every list of things DO’s, there is probably a list of DON’TS that accompanies it. Of course, it makes sense to know what safe troubleshooting steps you can practice and also understand what is not safe to practice. Your A/C system is a complicated machine that functions to provide cool air and comfort for your household. So, it’s not ideal to perform anything that may compromise your system, causing more A/C issues down the road. We understand you may be frustrated at this time without a working A/C but stay calm; it will be okay. We have got your back!

Perhaps you think of yourself as a handy person; if this is the case, please keep in mind that when you troubleshoot your A/C, it’s imperative you stick to basic troubleshooting steps unless you are a licensed HVAC specialist. Otherwise, you could find yourself in a position where you regret performing a DIY repair. DIY repairs can lead to disastrous snowball effects of one problem occurring after another. When this happens, it’s not only exhausting but can lead to costly repair after repair in order to rectify the issue. It’s best to leave the repairs to a licensed HVAC contractor. Not to mention, many risks of safety hazards can stem from DIY repairs. While waiting for your HVAC technician to arrive at your home, it may be tempting to look for relief from the heat.

You should avoid opening the windows or external doors to your house. Doing this may enable the heat to seep into your home faster. In addition, you should also stay away from heat-producing appliances like a stove or dryer as they can add to the rising heat. And lastly, please do not open your freezer in the hope of cooling down. Doing so won’t provide much relief at all. And it’s not worth risking spoiling your frozen food for!

In the case your air conditioner acts up out of nowhere, it’s always good to strategize and have a plan formulated to deal with the situation accordingly.
