With a population of around 784 people, the Village of Seven Mile in Butler County was laid out on a turnpike in 1841. The village got its name from the Sevenmile Creek, which is nearby. It earned its incorporation as a village in 1875.
During the early part of the 1860s, famed American educator and composer Benjamin Hanby called Seven Mile home while he served briefly as the principal at the local Seven Mile Academy. Also a pastor, Hanby wrote about 80 songs, most popular of which being Christmas songs like “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas” and “Up on the House-Top.”
By 1905, the Village of Seven Mile had a mill, a tin shop, a meat store, a harness shop, and a hotel. During the Great Dayton Flood in 1913, Seven Mile was one of the few areas spared from the devastation, primarily because of an elevated railroad grade that separated it from the Sevenmile Creek.
According to an April 6, 1901, magazine article, the village celebrated a unique sort of parade at the turn of the 20th century called the “Rag’n Fads.” According to the article, the children in the community all dressed up in tattered clothing for the parade.
